"Typographic arrangement should achieve for the reader what
voice tone conveys for the listener." El Lissitzky 1893-1941

To me,

Good understanding of type will progress to good understanding of kinetic type

A good motion artists =
Someone who has good sense of design and a great sense of timing

As a rule, you must study the static before you can progress to the kinetic.

The static: Design components and principles
1: Movement (insinuated)
2: Tension (between elements)
3: Balance (of composition)
4: Unity
5: Rhythm
6: Flow
7: Emphasis
8: Scale
9: Depth
10: Contrast
&#60;img src="http://payload49.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/3281780/principlesDesign.jpg" width="357" height="367" width_o="357" height_o="367" src_o="http://payload49.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/3281780/principlesDesign_o.jpg" data-mid="17071262"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The Kinetic : principles of motion
1: Timing
2: movement has slow-in, slow-out or is constant
3: Anticipation (how it starts)
4: Arced motion or linear
5: progressive change

I draw all of my font, well most of them because I enjoy it
and, anyway, I can never find the right system font!

Type is used as: Title - sub title or as text!
But today it also moves!

What is design?

To me,

Design = better way to communicate something (an improvement!)
The best way to communicate = tell stories!

Stories and anecdotes are the best way to remember something
and to communicate a message!

Questions I ask myself to create good Typography =

the Type has to:

1: complements something or

2: creates an opposition (ex: bold grotesk type to show something elegant)

3: be legible and/or communicate something
(not all type needs to be legible, good example: graffiti)

"don't confuse legibility with communication" David Carson 1952 - ?

4: appeal to your audience &#38; clarity

What is good kinetic type?

To me, good type motion =
1: communicates (story!)
2: possess Interesting transitions (in and out of the text)
3: complements or contrast with the style of the motion piece
 (drawn animation over live action = contrast)
4: best when it has an element of surprise
(something the audience would not expect)
5: good timing
6: personality

		<description>This section is a journal documenting some of the projects i worked on independently or contract base:

February 2012: Valentine 2012
During down time and After work hours, I was tempted to do a Valentine's card before the deadline, February 14! The project wasn't finished but this what i had so far. I liked some of the ideas and might use some of it in future projects:

February 2012: Pitch for YouTube
I was approach by Shylo in San Diego to help them Pitch for a youTube add to promote advertising on the youtube site. I truly enjoyed working on these and Shylo's direction was great :)
Here are the frames with the youtube colors applied to it:
&#60;img src="http://payload45.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/3208559/Youtube_styleframe_web1.jpg" width="500" height="1165" width_o="500" height_o="1165" src_o="http://payload45.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/3208559/Youtube_styleframe_web1_o.jpg" data-mid="16426099"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Different color treatment:
&#60;img src="http://payload45.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/3208559/Youtube_styleframe_web2.jpg" width="500" height="1165" width_o="500" height_o="1165" src_o="http://payload45.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/3208559/Youtube_styleframe_web2_o.jpg" data-mid="16426100"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Janurary 2012: Pitch for show: Battle of the Emsee
In January, during down time, I was approached by Monkey Brain in LA to pitch and possibly work on a show about the battles of MCs. The project was pretty cool because they wanted to mix live action footage of urban streets in different part of the States with a mix of animated drawn elements that would "pop" over top of it. Here is my attempt at the pitch which they liked and approved but never got pass that... :( Here are some of my favorites:
&#60;img src="http://payload45.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/3208559/MC_styleframes_web2.jpg" width="500" height="2313" width_o="500" height_o="2313" src_o="http://payload45.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/3208559/MC_styleframes_web2_o.jpg" data-mid="16425742"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

December - January 2012: Ministry of Heath Ontario
In late December, after I sent my Christmas video card (link) I was approached by Lisa Batke from Hesty to pitch for a health awareness web video for the Ministry of Health Ontario. The project was mainly to sensibilities the population of Ontario of the options they have within their health system and how the can help make it better.

Here is the description of the Treatment during the pitch:

"The project will be composed of multiple icons and simplified symbols to representing ideas and situations. The continuity of the scenes will be directed by geometric shapes, color and mostly arrows to indicate direction, rise and fall of ideas and of course motion. the camera work will have depth and use a lot of positive/negative shapes to indicate change of ideas. most movements will utilize all of the axis of the screen from rotations, to scales and as well as lateral. In brief, the transition should feel seamless.

Because of the nature of the subject, the visual should have warmth and a good feeling about it while having a serious tone. The elements will feel textured and less sterile (vector). The presence of characters will be at a minimal but the elements will move in a fluid and flexible way, the character performance will be reserved to the arrows and the elements."

Suffice it to say, I was trilled to pitch for this project and was actually allocated the project. Unfortunately the project was later cancelled during production. It was quite fun working with the people from Hesty, Double Plus and Black and blue from Toronto.

This is some of the animation done by me:

Here are some of the style Frames i did during the pitch process:
&#60;img src="http://payload45.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/3208559/MHO_Web_styleFrames.jpg" width="500" height="2032" width_o="500" height_o="2032" src_o="http://payload45.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/3208559/MHO_Web_styleFrames_o.jpg" data-mid="16424654"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

This is the Storyboard development for the whole project. Boards done by me and the color direction was done by Micheal McDougall from Black&#38;blue in Toronto.
&#60;img src="http://payload45.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/3208559/MHO_Web_storyboard.jpg" width="500" height="910" width_o="500" height_o="910" src_o="http://payload45.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/3208559/MHO_Web_storyboard_o.jpg" data-mid="16424651"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;</description>

		<description>This is a small 2D animation exercise i did during down time. Produced in Adobes' after effects and flash.

The project was more of a free flow without any conceptualizing and/or organizing. It was like doodling and/or sketching with animation! Basically, I just started animating and got this:

		<description>This section is a journal documenting some of the projects i worked on independently or contract base:

November 2011: Yammer Spots
Yammer spots done at CruxNY. With the good direction and aid of the Crux team, my responsibilities for the project(s), were mostly animation and compositing:

For the Logo animations, i was told to do whatever i wanted and just enjoy myself. Suffice it to say i love doing this type of animation. I designed and animated these two:

July 2011: Sprint 3D commercial:
Sprint commercial done at Transistor Studios. With the aid of others, I was responsible for rigging, animating, lighting and rendering the project. The complexity of the project was to animated a lot of droids in a short amount of time (~2 weeks) The video shows the progress as well as the final.

June 2011: Sony PlayStation home spot:
Spot promoting a PlayStation home winter villa spot. I was responsible for animating the motion graphics on some of the video captures of the villa.

June 2011: Zoobles pitch:
this is a project i worked on for Shilo San Diego for a pitch for a toy line called zoobles. The target audience is girls ages 4 to 9 so i decided to use more of a doodle look for the graffiti. here are some style frames.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/917960/shiloZoobles.jpg" width="500" height="2296" width_o="500" height_o="2296" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/917960/shiloZoobles_o.jpg" data-mid="10958651"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

June 2011: ESPN animation:
Spot done at Buck. I was responsible for animating some 2D special effect animation. The video shows the scenes i did and then the final project.

May 2011:Transformers rescue Bot commercial:
Project worked on at Transistor Studios. My responsibilities where to model, Rig, animated and render. I modeled Optimus, The police car and boulder (the green construction guy). I also helped out on the title logo animation. In this video, you can see two of my proposals. Also in this video is the progress of the project, some render scenes and a shot i animated and rendered.

April 2011: BMP commercial:
This is a project i worked on at Transistor Studios. It was a project that took 4 to 5 days during a weekend. I worked with the CD at Transistor as well as two other motion artist. it was a great project so here it is:

March 2011: Public Mobile web advertisement:
This is part two of a web advertisement for a Canadian telephone service company, Public Mobile, produced by some friends of mine and animated by them as well as I. The schedule was quite short, five days for the English and French track, and it was completely produced with adobe's after effects. The version presented here has the unfinished sound design as well as some of the timing and elements where reedited for the final. Personally i like the dynamism of this one.

February 2011: definition 6 Coca Cola: workspace 2020:
This is one of three spots that was used to announce the renovation that will occur up to 2020 for coca cola's new facilities in Atlanta. My responsibilities where management of rendering, compositing finishes as well as animating the end tag. Design and concept done by the people at definition 6 . I helped finish the rendering and compositing as well as animated the end dag under the direction of my Creative director.

February 2011: definition 6 Kids Screen:
This was a project done at definition 6. It was an internal piece to try to promote the companies' ability to do children's spots and commercial work. Design and concept done by the people at definition 6 . I was responsible of doing the base compositing as well as some animation.

January 2011: Buck style frame for Fruitsnacks
This is a style frame I did to complement Buck's pitch for a whole new series of commercials using fruit snack elements like fruit roll ups, gushers and fruit by the foot to build the world. The frame was done in Adobe's Illustrator:&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/917960/bench.jpg" width="500" height="386" width_o="500" height_o="386" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/917960/bench_o.jpg" data-mid="6108740"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

December 2010: DQ style frames
Here are a couple of style frames i did for PiranhaNYC for Dairy Queen end tag pitch. They wanted it to be off the wall and hectic. The project was allocated to my good friends at Buck. I had a couple of days to produce these frames I really like the second idea:
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/917960/DQ_concept1.jpg" width="500" height="1146" width_o="500" height_o="1146" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/917960/DQ_concept1_o.jpg" data-mid="4403315"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/917960/DQ_concept2.jpg" width="500" height="1532" width_o="500" height_o="1532" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/917960/DQ_concept2_o.jpg" data-mid="4403316"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/917960/DQ_concept3.jpg" width="500" height="1146" width_o="500" height_o="1146" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/917960/DQ_concept3_o.jpg" data-mid="4403318"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

December 2010: Nicorette end tag reanimated:
This is an end tag I did at Brand New school. The concept and the previous end tags were already done; I had to find a creative way to add the two tags together. The agency wanted the tag to fall of like a cue card and reveal the new one.

		<description>Selected work:
Here are some of the projects I worked on at Buck. It is quite an amazing company and, the staff, the direction and the people at Buck are always striving for perfection. they are, to say the least, creatives. Furthermore, They have a good sense of "joie de vivre" (love their Ping-Pong tournaments). For more on the company and their tremendous body of work, please visit the web site: buck.tv

Sherwin-Williams
During the production of Sherwin-Williams paint chip commercials, I had the opportunity to do some style frame/color scripts for small 15 seconds spots.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/sherwin_color_comp.jpg" width="500" height="1010" width_o="500" height_o="1010" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/sherwin_color_comp_o.jpg" data-mid="4396274"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Grimbergen Beer
This is a series of animation/small clips i did in after effects for the beer commercial Grimbergen. Presented in the video are the clips and later on the final project. Other responsibilities during my production were also to do some preliminary style frames and some character drawings. here is a selection:
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/grim_comp.jpg" width="500" height="592" width_o="500" height_o="592" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/grim_comp_o.jpg" data-mid="4396254"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Verizon Fios pitch:
this is a Pitch that i did at Buck. They wanted a more iconic look for the project. So i decided to use Scandinavian influences and very basic geometric shapes. As well, i was allocated enough time to do a quick animation test. Unfortunately the project was given to another company. This was my first frame. I was asked to change the colors to the "Verizon red".
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/Untitled-1.jpg" width="452" height="255" width_o="452" height_o="255" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/Untitled-1_o.jpg" data-mid="4117414"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
final story pitch:
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/verizon_a03_jk.jpg" width="500" height="490" width_o="500" height_o="490" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/verizon_a03_jk_o.jpg" data-mid="4117415"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
and animation test:

Nick's FanBoy:
One of my first tasks at Buck was to do this small animation of one of the characters from "Fanboy and Chum Chum". It was part of a pitch for Nick television. Thanks to Gareth O’Brien For guiding me on the timing of the piece.

animation test chum chum from jacques khouri on Vimeo.

Global funds:
It is rare that you get a chance to do a project with a good message that could actually change the way people think. This piece is an HIV campaign on helping reduce children born with HIV. My responsibilities, with two other animators, was to help the lead animator, Conrad Ostwald, animate the piece in After Effects. Thanks to Conrad for his patience on a big project as well as his feedback.

Shown in the video is the part I animated based on the art director's (Yker Monero) style frames (shown bellow the video) Followed by the full clip of the campaign.

Ally Bank Pitch:
Two other designers and I were called to do some preliminary animation for Ally Bank's end tag: The challenge was to create tags that are serious and entertaining at the same time. Here are my attempts:

Ally Buck Pitch from jacques khouri on Vimeo.

Fruit Snacks - Photo Booth:
This summer project was a small fifteen second commercial to promote fruit snacks (Fruit roll up, Gushers, Fruit by the foot, etc. ) by showing that the product is fun to play with as well as eat.

These are some of the preliminary sketches for the characters. Orion Tait (Creative Director) and Thomas Schmid (Associate Creative Director) were a great Help in helping me develop some odd designs. the finals were done by Stephen Kelleher, Kent Mudle and Thomas Schmid.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/sketch_fruit_comp_small1.jpg" width="576" height="2407" width_o="576" height_o="2407" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/sketch_fruit_comp_small1_o.jpg" data-mid="3033851"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
My second mandate for the project was to create an interesting environment to have the characters interact in. Objectively, my supervisors wanted a place that was fun and also summery. Since the project had a photo booth, I chose places where there would be a booth like the subway or the beach. One of the difficulties was to try to think that all the object within the background had to be designed and colored with fruit Snacks. My Background inspiration came mostly from Coney Island and Lucchetti commercials from peppermelon.tv
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/BG_color_test_640.jpg" width="640" height="643" width_o="1197" height_o="1203" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/BG_color_test_o.jpg" data-mid="3007799"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
I also started designing and drawing diagrams to help the 3D Cg modelers create the backgrounds props.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/bg_construction_640.jpg" width="640" height="463" width_o="966" height_o="699" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/24517/645831/bg_construction_o.jpg" data-mid="3007824"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Bellow is the 2D animatic as well as the 2D animatic in comparison with the 3D final and the 3D final of the project. The animatic was animated on ones and twos to allow the CG riggers and animators to have a better perception of the complexities of the movement. Kent Mudle, great animator, helped me animate a lot of the shot in the animatic. Kent also went on to animate the photo booth in the final production.
animatic FruitSnacks and Final comparison from jacques khouri on Vimeo.
Buck Summer Projet:
During down time, Buck create a summer project to permit the staff to do a short piece (under ten seconds) of animation. The mandate was to use the Bucky ball at the beginning and the end of the clip.

		<description>Grow from jacques khouri on Vimeo.

Small Project Created During my down time at work. It was mostly more experimental then anything else. No planing of sorts. I was playing around with Adobe's Flash as well as After Effect to see if i could get a look that i would like and ended up with this!

The project was animated traditionally Frame By frame with a Wacom Cintiq (12wx) on a PC desktop. I must say that animating directly on the screen took some time to get use to but in the long run it made the whole process much easier then scanning a bunch of papers.

Production time took an accumulated two weeks to animate, color and a week to composite and fix frames.

some concept illustration for the type treatment:
